The Epson Perfection 3200 Photo ($400 street) is aptly named: Thanks to its 3,200-dpi resolution, it's as close to perfect as any flatbed scanner we've seen.
The 3200 Photo has outstanding specs: 3,200-pixel-per-inch optical resolution that yields a total hardware resolution of 3,200 by 6,400 ppi, with 48-bit color, plus a dynamic range score of 3.4 for better detail in shadows and highlights. It features both USB 2.0 and FireWire interfaces.

The letter-size scanner has a transparency adapter built into the lid for scanning slides or negatives. The unit comes equipped with three well-designed film holders that allow for simultaneous scanning of up to ten 35-mm negatives in twin strips, four 35-mm slides in 2-by-2 mounts, or single 4-by-5 unmounted transparencies. You can program the one-touch button on the front for nine separate operations, including copy, photo print, scan to e-mail, scan to OCR, and scan to PDA.

Setup and installation were problem-free. In addition to Epson's Twain driver and Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 (a top-notch entry-level photo editor), the 3200 Photo comes with LaserSoft's SilverFast SE 6, which lets you remove defects from images, restore color, and sharpen images with just a few clicks. Such a wide range of software permits users to select the interface to match their experience and level of sophistication, from no-brainer auto-scans to expert micro-adjustments.
Unlike with other scanners we've tested, scanning is both speedy and silent. Image quality on photographic prints is exceptional, with accurate color and exquisite detail, especially in shadow areas. Film scan quality is fair to good: better than most flatbed scanners we've tested but inferior to dedicated (and more costly) film scanners.
The 3200 Photo doesn't offer special features, such as the automatic photo feeder (for scanning a stack of snapshots) found in the HP ScanJet 5500, or the built-in Digital ICE (for eliminating scratches in prints) found in the Microtek ScanMaker 6800 (First Looks, January 2003). But what this outstanding scanner does deliver is fast and silent performance, top-notch software, and exceptional image quality.
